Your Options for Teeth Whitening in Salt Lake City

It’s hard to not be positively impacted when you see someone with a bright, beautiful smile.  That’s the kind of smile that makes someone appear more healthy and youthful.  Whitening your teeth is one of the quickest and least expensive ways to improve and brighten your smile.  If you’re looking for high-quality teeth whitening Salt Lake City residents trust, Kim Roberts DDS is here to help you get the smile you deserve.

Importance of a Smile

If you haven’t noticed, the impact of a good smile can be big.  We view smiles as extremely valuable and important as a society, and studies have shown that.  The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry conducted such a study and found that roughly 99.7 percent of adults believe their smile to have a large impact on their social life.  It also found that 96 percent of adults in the study believed that members of the opposite gender were more attractive with a whiter and brighter smile.  Interestingly, 74 percent think those with more attractive smiles are much more likely to find success in the workforce, and those with less attractive smiles are at a considerable disadvantage.  The survey included the question, “What would you like to improve most about your smile?”  The vast majority of respondents claimed it was to have whiter teeth.

Why Do Teeth Get Discolored?

As is the case with virtually all aspects of the body, with advancing age comes wear and tear.  When it comes to teeth, they will become darker over time – baby teeth are generally much whiter than adult teeth.  This is why adults with whiter teeth tend to look younger than their adult counterparts with yellow or gray smiles.

There are plenty of ways your teeth can darken and become discolored.  Here’s a list of a handful of causes to tooth discoloration:

  • Your genetics
  • Tobacco and drug use
  • Poor dental hygiene
  • Certain medications
  • Growing age
  • Drinks such as tea, cola, and coffee commonly stain teeth, as can carrots, apples, and potatoes (among many other foods)

Teeth Whitening Options

There are many options available to you when trying to decide the best way to whiten your teeth.  You can choose to have your teeth whitened through an in-office procedure, with a take-home treatment from your dentist, or even with an over-the-counter solution.

In-Office Treatment

One of the most popular dental treatments performed today is in-office teeth whitening.  Dentists are able to perform whitening procedures in a closely monitored environment to create a safe and painless procedure for patients.  This treatment uses a highly concentrated bleaching gel that whitens the teeth immediately.  As is the case with anything, there are both advantages and disadvantages to in-office treatment.

Advantages of In-Office Teeth Whitening

  • Much safer than any other teeth whitening option
  • Produces the best and fastest results
  • Highly innovative gel that doesn’t cause pain to the teeth or gums.

Disadvantages of In-Office Teeth Whitening

  • This is a more expensive alternative to take-home options – generally costs 40 percent more.
  • This isn’t a permanent solution – the teeth will accumulate stains and discoloration once again (just like they would otherwise).  Dentists will typically give take-home trays for patients to continue bleaching their teeth to maintain their brightness.
  • Results are unpredictable, there are factors such as heredity, age, and the different types of tooth stains that impact the effectiveness of the treatment.

Are All Stains Created Equal?

In short, no.  There are stains that are bleached out more easily than others through in-office teeth whitening.  Some of the more common issues that are easier to remove include stains due to advancing age, such as yellow, gray, or brown stains.  Of those, yellow stains are the easiest to whiten.  Stains caused by tobacco use, coffee, wine, and soda are all on the easier side to get rid of as well.

Some of the more difficult stains to bleach come from overexposure to fluoride, this can cause fluorosis that discolors the teeth.  Inorganic stains will sometimes react poorly to in-office bleaching, as does dentin that becomes dark due to trauma.

Take-home Bleach Trays

Bleaching at home is also a very good option, but it will mean having to wait a few weeks before seeing substantial results of the treatment.  Even though this treatment isn’t as quickly impactful as in-office treatment, it is still much faster than over-the-counter products.  Additionally, take-home treatment is cheaper than bleaching in-office.  The cost is higher than that of over-the-counter products, but the overall results are typically much better.  The material of the trays are designed to be comfortable and custom-fitted.  The trays don’t move or slip inside your mouth like over-the-counter products do, and you can choose exactly what time of the day you bleach your teeth.

Over-the-Counter Treatment

If it hasn’t been made abundantly clear already, over-the-counter solutions simply aren’t very good compared to the kind of treatment you get from a dentist.  However, that hasn’t slowed down the rise in popularity of these treatments as a teeth whitening option.  Their big selling points are their convenience and price.  For those who can’t afford or don’t want to pay for higher quality treatment, over-the-counter products may be the only viable option.  Some of the most popular products are whitening toothpaste, mouth trays with bleach, and whitening strips.
